The skeletal design of the Eggbeaters results in several important features; Lightness, because there's hardly anything there at all; Mud resistance, as debris is able to flow or get pushed through the wings with little to no hinderance; Ease of entry, thanks to the four attachment points, you're almost guaranteed to clip in as soon as you step onto the pedal. And if you're foot is a little forward or back, just wiggle it a but and it'll fall right in.
The cleat used with the Egg Beaters, the same used with every Crank Brothers mountain pedal, offers a super-low stack height. This results in increased power transfer, better control, and the low-profile of the pedal provides extra clearance for rocks and cornering.
